Eggs...Wonderful Eggs

Want to lose weight, not crave sugar as much and have more energy??

Eat Breakfast and make sure it is high in protein.

I eat 2 eggs every morning. I turn the pan on low, crack two eggs, go take a shower, and when I return voila....breakfast.

I'm not one to eat a lot of breakfast. I like to get up in the morning and have my coffee. Usually I'm not hungry enough after that to eat. Besides, once I'm finished my coffee and e-mail it is always time to do other things. So...I force myself to eat two eggs. Good for me, easy to eat, packed with protein vitamins and minerals, low in calories, and not too filling.

Good thing about protein is that it will also keep you satiated longer (not feeling hungry).

First Run

Went for a run yesterday. It was a beautiful sunny fall afternoon and I just needed some SPACE and some PEACE AND QUIET. It was great.

I ran for 3 minutes, walked 1 minute and alternated like that for a little over 22 minutes.

That was plenty as mid run my lower abdomen and 'parts' became a little sore. I can also feel it today.

I am glad I went but I will have to wait until the 6 week mark before I run again.

Swine Flu Information

My friend sent me this article about Swine Flu and Natural Remedies. I found it VERY informative.....

Swine Flu and You

This season, we find ourselves flooded with public health messages about flu prevention, which includes injecting ourselves with both the seasonal and swine flu vaccines. While no one wants to catch the flu, many of us question the safety of these vaccines and wonder whether a responsible choice for ourselves and our families includes receiving the vaccines, or refusing them.

The mainstream medical paradigm encourages prevention by focusing on controlling the virus, rather than by supporting the person who might contract the virus. Medical systems such as Naturopathic Medicine, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and Homeopathy, encourage prevention by ensuring a balanced immune system that won’t under- or over-react to a virus. This provides you with broad protection against viruses and the bacteria responsible for many complications from the flu.
The swine flu is very virulent, meaning that it is can be transmitted easily from person to person. However, it is considered to be less deadly than most flu viruses. This may be partly because of the other unusual quality of H1N1, which is that it tends to affect healthy people age 5 to 24 who presumably are less likely to develop complications from the flu. Two main theories may explain this strange age-related phenomenon and provide essential clues for best prevention practices. The principle theory suggests that younger people are more likely to develop symptoms of the H1N1 flu because their immune system overreacts to the virus and creates a “cytokine storm”, which causes more damage than the virus itself. In this case, flu prevention requires that a person balances the immune system, rather than stimulates it, so that complications are less likely to occur.

If you use herbs to combat the flu virus, please choose your herbs carefully. The second theory is that the virus isn’t attacking young people per se, but that older people are responding less to the virus because they already carry some natural immunity. The 2009 H1N1 virus may be related to the original 1918 Spanish Flu H1N1 virus, which affected the human population most strongly before 1956. People who were exposed to H1N1 before 1956 may carry some natural immunity against the 2009 version.

To control the spread of H1N1, Canada entered into a $400 million dollar contract with the pharmaceutical company GlaxoSmithKline to provide Canadians with an H1N1 flu vaccine. This vaccine also contains an adjuvant (known as AS03 in the Canadian vaccines), that increases your body’s immune response to the inactivated virus. Preliminary results by GSK suggest 100% immunity to the virus within 3 weeks of receiving the flu shot.

Though the World Health Organization (WHO) indicates that there are no significant safety concerns regarding these adjuvants, Health Canada and the US Food and Drug Administration have not yet approved them. Governments are fast-tracking these approvals to beat the flu wave and many research bodies caution against their approval under these strict timelines. The vaccine is a cause for concern for the following reasons: Ongoing unpublished research in British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec, suggests that people who received the seasonal flu vaccine last year may have an increased chance of catching the swine flu this season.

The oil component of the adjuvant called squalene is linked to a rare but serious autoimmune disease called Guillain Barre Syndrome, and a condition known as Gulf War Syndrome that developed in soldiers who received experimental anthrax vaccines. Some authors go so far as to link slow, progressive neurological disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s with chronic, squalene-induced brain inflammation. Furthermore, the potential interaction between squalene and thimerosol, a mercury preservative in these vaccines, has not been adequately studied. Thimerosol is also linked to the development of some neurological disorders, (though much current research suggests otherwise).

Finally, the strict vaccination schedule intended to minimize the impact of a flu pandemic might in-fact worsen the situation by encouraging development of vaccine-resistant viruses. Anti-viral drug-resistant strains of H1N1 have already been identified. Regardless of whether you decide to receive the vaccine, the benefits of a more balanced, capable immune system are incontrovertible.

Here are some ways you can help to protect yourself and your family during this flu season:

Good hygiene practices: H1N1 can infect a person for 2 to 8 hours after being deposited on hard surfaces such as stainless steel and plastic, and for a few minutes after being deposited on soft surfaces. Be sure to wash your hands frequently, cough and sneeze into your elbow or a handkerchief, clean surfaces with your usual disinfectant, and stay home if you feel ill and have a fever.

Make healthier dietary choices: Avoid sugar and refined grains, such as bread and baked goods, which can inhibit the immune system. Replace pro-inflammatory red meats and dairy with anti-inflammatory “good” omega-3 fats, available in fish or in a high-quality fish oil supplement. Eat 6 servings of colourful vegetables daily, and eat plenty of fresh garlic, which has potent anti-viral properties.

Keep mucous membranes moist by using a humidifier and keeping up water intake, (generally 35mL of water for each kg of body weight). This will help prevent the virus from latching on, and keep the immune cells in that part of your body healthy.

Also, avoid alcohol and coffee which can be dehydrating.

Don’t underestimate the impact of stress and lack of sleep! Much evidence demonstrates how these situations inhibit optimal immune function.

Finally, prevent infection by keeping your immune system balanced with supplements, including 2000 to 4000 IU vitamin D3 (cholecalciferol), vitamin C with flavonoids, and a high-quality probiotic (such as Genestra’s HMF forte).

Most people with hectic lifestyles in our northern climate will benefit from these nutrients. A qualified health practitioner may further prescribe an individualized botanical combination or homeopathic medicine that helps to balance rather than stimulate your immune system.

The above suggestions may work in lieu of, or in conjunction with the vaccines, should you choose to receive them. However, please consider that the complex healing mechanisms of your body are possibly more capable of managing a novel virus than a novel man-made pharmaceutical.

Swine Flu Stuff

So I've been doing a lot of thinking and research about the swine flu vaccine. Do I get it or not? Do I NEED it or not??

There seems to be a lot of conflicting information out there and unanswered questions. After doing some research I feel more informed but there are so many things I still want to know.
I'm making an appointment with my doctor to talk to him about it as well as booking an appointment with my naturopathic doctor. I'm sure that by the time the vaccine is available to all I will know what I wish to do.

I'm sanitizing my shopping cart, washing my kids constantly, and taking my vitamins.

In the mean time there IS something that is bugging me.
Out of ALL the articles in the local paper and news about how to help prevent the spread of the disease NONE seem to mention the OBVIOUS.

OTHER than cover your cough and sneeze with your sleeve, wash your hands and disinfect everything, I would REALLY like to be seeing the following:

1) Get plenty of Rest.
2) Drink plenty of water
3) Eat well
4) Take your vitamins, extra vitamin C, and zinc.
5) Try immune boosters such as green juice, eccinecea, Cold Fx
6) Blow your nose hard at the end of each day and gargle with salt water. This helps to kill anything that is just sitting there. (thank you kirsten for that advice)
7) and EXERCISE!!

There is no better PREVENTION than a healthy body and healthy immune system to fight off any flu bug. So do some research. Find out what YOU can do and what YOU can take to boost your immune system.

most of all. GET INFORMED!!!!!!!!!

4 weeks Postpartum

I'm now 4 weeks postpartum. No diet yet just trying to stay away from crappy food. So far I'm not having much success at that ;)
2 more weeks to go until I get to start exercising and will try to lose the extra 15 pounds I'm carrying by Christmas.

I figured I would wear the same shirt to show the progress of my belly shrinkage. It is a nursing top. Quite comfortable but not very flattering on my stomach. It is also hard to get the exact angle I was standing in but I think my 7 year old did a pretty good job.

So here you go.

This was at the 2 week mark. Oh good I DO see a big difference. Phew!!! Ha! Also notice the LACK of leaves on the ground outside. I have A LOT of raking to do!!!

Setting the Example

I was posting this picture of my fabulous husband on my other blog when I thought of something relevant to share on this FIT mom blog.

Want healthy children? Want them not to be lazy and sit in front of the t.v or computer all day??

SET THE EXAMPLE

They are watching you and taking cues from you.

Think you are too old??

BAH!!!! That is nonsense. The less you move the less you will be able to move. The more you move the better you will feel.

Too tired?? Do yourself a favor and pry your butt off the couch and go for a 10 minute walk. You may surprise yourself and have MORE energy and sleep much better!!

Really...I'm not joking... Try it.

You may be pleasantly surprised at the results. Unless you WANT to be old and lazy and have overweight and lazy children too ;)

Just a thought.

Crappy Feelings Need to Go Away

I'm tired and fat. Not a nice feeling. The baby is fussing more at night and I can't seem to stop eating treats. I actually think I've GAINED a little weight over the past week or so.

Lack of sleep + Poor Diet = Slowed down metabolism

Crap.

I am still trying not to think about it until the 6 week mark. Hard to do when I'm tired. I think I'm ready to start my Mommy and Me exercise video that was sent to me to review and blog about. It is gentle may be the kick I need to start taking care of myself again.

3 weeks and feeling pretty good.

We went for a walk as a family yesterday. I think the total path was maybe 2-3 kms?? I just strapped the baby to me in the Moby Wrap and set out. We were with all our kids so of course the pace was quite slow and for the first time my uterus and lower tummy did not hurt!
Yay...I'm recovering and on my way back to being a Fit Mommy!!

I'll be three weeks postpartum as of tomorrow and so far I'm feeling alright. Tomorrow I'm going to start to cut out the sweets in my diet and be a little more conscious of the amount of food I'm taking in. I would like to start my 6 weeks postpartum runs a little trimmer. I'm not going nuts...just cutting a few calories. It is more important to keep my energy levels up than diet.

Finding the Motivation

The weather is fowl. Dark and wet.

I am a woman of the sun. The darkness is horrible for my moods. I am one of those people who get SAD. Seasonal Depression or whatever the acronym stands for.

So how am I countering it??

Normally exercise plays a key role but because I still need to rest my postpartum body I am making sure I am taking my multi vitamins and Fish Oils. Oh....I'm also staying away from wine and cutting out the sweets. I think once my friends stop bringing me food (not that I'm complaining), I am going to put myself on a healthy diet. I will need to make sure that I am eating properly. Eating enough fruits and vegetables will also help me to lose more of this baby fat without the need for a 'diet'. This way at the 6 week mark I will have even less weight to feel bad about ;) I'm sure the less weight I have to feel bad about the less SAD I will be as well. Get it??

Such a vicious cycle to break though. When I'm feeling crappy all I want to do is eat sugar, have a glass of red wine, and hibernate on the couch. All it takes is a little will power to make ONE of the changes mentioned above and I start to feel motivated to put the 5th cookie down and go for a walk.

I'm worth it...At least that is what I am able to tell myself today.

I ran today.

I ran today.
O.K I ran for 5 seconds from the back of a building towards the van where my husband was picking me up.
It felt good.
Really good.
I miss running.
I can't wait till the 6 week postpartum date so I can run for more than 5 seconds
Yippee.

But for now I need to rest. I need to rest this body of mine that grew a human being in my belly for nine months. It deserves a rest so I will give that to it.

2 Weeks Postpartum Blues

I realized something last night.
For the past two weeks I've been living off of sugar.
Normally I eat pretty well. I allow myself treats every once in a while but we are not the type of family to always have goodies in the house. Why? because sugar is not good for you and we will eat it ALL in one day.

But, for the past two weeks there has been a steady stream of goodies. REALLY yummy goodies flowing through the house. That is what I get for having amazing friends that have been dropping off meals complete with dessert.

I realized last night that I'm becoming quite addicted to the sugar rush. I'm now CRAVING a sugar high only to be fulfilled by sweats, a glass of wine or a really strong coffee.

I'm noticing my mood beginning to shift. I'm getting weepy as I crash. My inner deep down soul mood is becoming more negative and cranky....depressive.

I need to FORCE myself to eat properly. To make a salad or a healthy shake and take my omega 3's and vitamins because at this point I don't WANT to bother. I can pretend to be enjoying all the goodies but I need to take a stand for myself before my mood shifts even more. Before I spiral down into a depression and lose control of the situation. I feel it. I've been here before and I know enough to stop before it is too late. I love my children too much to allow myself to be miserable around them.

My husband is off work for 4 months and I need to not think of how sad I'll be when he returns. No..I need to get outside, go for a hike in the woods with the kids and ENJOY this time we have together.

Or maybe I just need a few days of sunshine....

Fat Mama

My husband reminds me today that I delivered a baby not yet two weeks ago. I don't care. Today I am fat. I hate that I am and will be in maternity pants for a long while yet. I don't like that my boobs are HUGE, and my belly protrudes. Sigh........... So why post these pictures???

Motivation to stop eating ALL the cookies and treats that people give to us and to save one or two for the children. Motivation to post pictures that I'm proud of in a few months. Motivation to stop eating sugar because it makes me grumpy.......

And finally...Motivation to continue taking pictures at angles that FLATTER my body and not remind me of what I REALLY look like ;)

Babywearing...properly ;)

Two days postpartum I posted this picture of me wearing Audrey.....

Notice the belly!! Isn't the uterus unbelievable?? Amazing how it expands and shrinks to accommodate a human being in my belly. Anyway. Not the point. The point is that WEARING your baby is amazing. It is comforting for the baby to be so close to mama. It is also good for mama when it is done properly!!!
In this picture you can see how my protruding belly was preventing me from wearing the Cuddly wrap properly.
So.....Here I am 1 week postpartum wearing her the right way.

See? no protruding belly (at least not much) to hinder proper positioning. The Cuddly wrap is my favorite wrap for when I have a lot of movement to do...like dishes, cleaning, and dancing in the living room. Audrey stays nice and secure, I have BOTH my hands free, AND because it goes over BOTH shoulders, my back does not strain AT ALL.
Part of being a FIT MOM means doing things that help my body and soul. I believe proper babywearing helps your body AND your soul for BOTH mom AND BABY.... and I will continue to do it for as long as I can. The baby benefits from the closeness. They say babies worn close to their mothers also cry less and feel MORE secure when they are put down. Another great reason to hold them close.
