Step Two...

I found the Marathon I'm going to Run.

Saturday OCTOBER 11TH 2008 I'll be running the HARTFORD CONNECTICUT MARATHON

I am calling to book the appointment for a physical assessment.
This is important for several reasons...

I need to know the physical condition I'm starting in. I need to be aware of all muscle imbalances and weakness' so I can focus on strengthening and correcting them. Biking,Yoga, and my chiropractor will become cruicial in the coming months.

I am also going to start writing down my food and beverage intake for a week. That way I can show a nutritionist what my normal diet is. This makes it easier for her to figure out if I am getting all the nutrients and calories I need and to tweak my diet.

Good for you Alyson!! You have a goal race! How exciting.

I hope 2008 is super for all of you!

Just curious - how do you choose a marathon and why did you pick that one and not the Ottawa one (would May be too early?) or another one closer to home. How long should the 'average' runner train for a marathon?

May is too soon and WAY too hot. I would love the National capital but no thanks on the heat.
last year I was a spectator and I was sweating just standing there.
The fall Ottawa one has too many hills.
Adam has an Uncle in Connecticut and so we are going to combine the marathon with a small vacation. He lives next to NY city so why now. Good excuse for a vist.
Fall is good for me...good weather and tons of time...and just before I turn 31.

Average runner....start training once you can run 10kms....and should take about 18 weeks.

I'd be interested in training for a marathon if I could figure out how to not get so bored when I'm running. It's all I can do to keep myself focused for 30 minutes. I saw Katie Holmes finished the NY marathon in 5+ hours and I just can't imagine running for that long! What's the secret (if there is one)?

running partners or groups makes a HUGE difference. really keeps your mind off the pain and helps you stay at the right pace ect.
during a race you are so busy looking around, and having the crowd cheer you on it is different.
I think you should sign up for a 5km this summer...I think you would love it...you'll see.
you are more than welcome anytime to come out here and do a run with me some day. we can leave the kids with Adam ;)

I think I could definitely do a 5k but I'm considering a half marathon. Maybe after I read Stanton's book (which Dylan was going to buy for my birthday, then my stocking ... but hasn't yet :P).

If you are running a half than you and I are definitely getting together for our long runs! I would love that. Also, if you want to do a half...pick the race. To get yourself motivated and to give you small goals to get to the big goal sign up for a 5km, and/or 10km during your build up for a half. I'm going to run a few as well. It really gets you in the mood.
