Here is an article of me and my friend Sarah whom I running the marathon for. There is a little story, video and a couple of pictures. The video makes me laugh because you can tell how uncomfortable I am in front of a camera.
It is not too late to sponsor me!! ;)
Friends since childhood, Sarah Antonakos and Alyson McNish have been there for each other through the good times and bad. The dynamic duo are teaming up at Ottawa Race Weekend to raise funds for a disease that affects Antonakos’s four-year-old son and for which there is no cure.
The pair will run with more than 60 others under the banner TeamMitoCanada to raise awareness and funds for the little-known and understood mitochondrial disease. Antonakos’s son Nicholas was born with the disease, which causes energy-producing mitochondria in the body’s cells to malfunction. She says it’s incredibly difficult to diagnose because the mutation can occur anywhere in the body.
Nicholas is blind and has suffered seizures every day since the age of three months, in addition to gastrointestinal problems and developmental delay. Antonakos says it was a shock to learn that her first and only child would have to deal with such medical trauma.
Doctors haven’t found the mutation yet, but because of his symptoms Antonakos says they believe Nicholas’s brain is affected.
“My son is a real joy. He’s easygoing, he doesn’t complain, he’s happy. I have that to embrace. He shows us every day that he’s still learning, and that gives you hope.”
Nicholas attends preschool three days a week and will go to an elementary school in the fall with the help of a teacher’s aide.
Antonakos says it will be positive for Nicholas to be around other kids and for them to be around him, too. She says she hopes this will teach his peers to be accepting of people with special needs from a young age.
Mitochondrial disease affects at least one in every 6,000 people, from very mild to very severe cases. There is no cure, but some symptoms can be treated with medicine and physical activity can improve mitochondrial function, according to the MitoCanada organization.
Antonakos, who sits on the organization’s communications and awareness board, says funds go toward research and support for families dealing with mitochondrial disease.
Ottawa Race Weekend and the Calgary Marathon kick off on the same weekend, May 26 and May 27, with Team MitoCanada runners geared up for both events. The organization is well-represented with athletes donning a variety of branded gear not just in running events, but also in triathlons and other sports.
The team was launched last fall by Kyle McLaughlin, an emergency room doctor in Canmore, Alta. Although he has no personal connection to mitochondrial disease, a conversation struck up at a race prompted him to do something,Antonakos says.
It’s the same desire to make a difference that has McNish, a mother of four and runner for the past 10 years, reaching out to help. McNish and her family live on an organic farm in Brockville.
“I heard the Mito slogan, ‘running for those who can’t,’ and it really resonated with me because I can run,” she says.
“I can’t fix Nicholas and I can’t really help Sarah. We don’t live very close, so I can’t be there to help her in her daily struggles. What I can do is I can run.”
Running was a driving force in overcoming postpartum depression, saysMcNish, and it helps her to set a positive example for her kids.
It’s a way to push past your limits. “You reach those small goals and you realize they are attainable,” she says. “You realize that you can achieve things, you can do something that’s good and that’s healthy for you.”
McNish is trying to raise a dollar for every kilometre she runs, including training and running the marathon.
The goal is $1,125, and she says she’s raised 70 per cent of that so far. Team MitoCanada’s goal is $10,000 at Ottawa Race Weekend.
Though McNish has been running for a decade, Antonakos, who lives in Arnprior, took it up about a year ago. She says she’s inspired by her friend’s resolve to do this for Nicholas.
“Alyson’s pushing herself for my son, so I can push myself for my son as well,” she says. “It means the world to me, it really does.”
Nicholas will be there at the race, wearing a Team MitoCanada sweatshirt and cheering for his mom.
Anyone registered for Ottawa Race Weekend can join Team MitoCanada by emailing Julie.Drury@mitocanada.org.

Why I'm running for Team Mito
I have only a month or so left of my my marathon training. The training is going well and I'm VERY excited to run a half Marathon as a training run this coming Sunday. At these final stages it is nice to be reminded why I'm doing what I'm doing. It allows me to dig deep when the running gets tough and find the motivation to keep going.
Team Mito is now officially a charity for Ottawa race weekend. You can listen to a podcast with Julie Drury talking about our team.
To find it, I will try to provide the link. If the link does not work, google "irun Team 1200'' Find the podcasts and Click on April 14 2012. Julie can be found at the 21minute mark.
Try this link...HERE
Thank you for all your encouragement and support these last few months. There is still time to help my cause by donating. My donation page is HERE. I would love to reach 70% of my goal by the end of April. Thanks.

Athlete Profile : Team Mito
My Marathon journey is featured on the Mito Canada web page. You can check it out here...
http://www.mitocanada.org/team/athlete-profile-alyson-mcnish-team-mitocanada-ottawa/.
If not, here it is cut and pasted from the site....
As we begin the countdown to Ottawa Race Weekend May 26th and 27th, Team MitoCanada Ottawa is going to profile a few of our athletes who are running on behalf of MitoCanada. I’m pleased to introduce you to our first ‘athlete profile’, one of our Marathon athletes, Alyson McNish.

Name: Alyson McNish
Occupation: Mother of 4 children ages 9, 7, 4, and 2. I manage a 150 year old homestead while my husband works outside our home. We have just started our own organic farm, and we will eventually take over the family farm to become the 6th generation to farm this land.
Previous Running Experience: Although I’ve always been active and involved in many sports, I began running in University. I also figured that since my degree was in Kinesiology, I was a fitness trainer, and I was a medic in the military, I should put my knowledge to the test and set an example for my clients.
My first race was the Vancouver Sun Run 10k in 2003. From the moment I arrived at the starting line I was HOOKED. I loved the adrenalin and excitement, and was amazed at how the crowd carried me to the end. I surprised myself finishing the race in 55minutes that day after never running 10kms before that date. I realized that running was easy for me and perhaps with a little training I could be good. Running was also a great way for me to lose the baby weight after each child.
I enjoyed 5k’s, and after having the support of a running group, managed a personal best of 21:45.
My running journey however has not been easy. Since my first race, I’ve had 3 more children. In 2004 I was paralyzed from a tumor that was crushing my spinal cord, and I’ve been plagued with a knee injury. Each time, however I’ve just started over again. Running for me has so many parallels to life’s journey. We get knocked down, but never out. Sometimes while lying on the ground I can only manage to lift my head, look up and cry out. Other times I hop back up and keep running. Even after the doctor’s told me that I may never walk again, I laid there and realized that no matter what happened, everything would still be o.k. I still had a wonderful life, and would just have to adjust. I realized at that moment that there is no point in worrying about things that are beyond my control. I was in God’s hands. He has a plan for my life, and I will be just fine.
I’m positive that experience made me stronger and better able to handle life’s tough challenges. It also forced me to rely on other people and accept help when I need it. I’ve always been strong, but I learned that it is OK to lean on the people around me that love me and want to help.
Feeling strong in body, last year I decided to train for my first 1/2 Marathon. I wanted to push myself beyond my comfort level, and get one step closer to accomplish my dream of a marathon. At that time in my life, I also started listening to God’s voice in my heart a little more. I kept asking God to help me do something with my life that was beyond myself. I don’t want my life to be about me anymore. I was recovering from a year of severe post-partum depression and was searching for purpose in my life. I know that I was created for a purpose and I want Him to use my life to make a difference. I let go of trying to do things on my own and gave my life to God. I needed Him to use me the way I was, flaws included to make a difference. This goes along with the decision for my husband and me to take over the family farm. We know that God is going to give us all this land, and we have decided to be good stewards of it, and let him use it for something greater than ourselves. We are not only going to provide people with healthy organic food, but we are also going to renew the land, and build a group home for troubled teens on the property. Back to running… After asking God how He can use me right now, and use who I am and what I love to help others, he spoke to my heart. I decided that for every step I take training, I would like to do it for someone else. I ended up raising over $500 for World Hope Canada. My 1/2 Marathon journey challenged and surprised me in way I could never have imagined. It was a tough road getting there and I gained a new respect for the long distances. In the end I ran it in 2hrs and 1min.
This year, I want to do the same thing with my Marathon Journey. So for every km I will be running from January to May, I am trying to raise a dollar. That is why my goal is $1125.00. When my km is covered by someone else’s donation, I feel like they are also running along beside me.
Crossing the finish line in May for me will be more than just running 42kms. For me it will be an accumulation of so many things. I will have proved to myself that I can do anything if I put my mind to it and work at it. All the pain and sweat will be worth it. I actually have a saying that I repeat to myself when the journey is getting difficult and I don’t think I can go on. It is “I can do all things through Christ who gives me strength” Phil 4:13. I try to remember this in life as well as in running, and every trial makes me a better person.
Why I am running for Team Mito Canada: I’ve had 4 healthy children. When my childhood friend Sarah became pregnant with her first child I was pregnant with my 3rd. I kept telling her how amazing it was and how much I enjoyed having my babies. Unfortunately her experience proved to be so much more challenging than mine. I felt and feel so badly that she has had to go through the trials of mitochondrial disease with her son. There is nothing I can say or do that can fix things or change her situation. I also live too far to be able to help in anyway. Running for Team MitoCanada is my way of telling her how much I love her. Life is not about me anymore, and I have chosen to make every step for her. I like Team MitoCanada’s saying “Running for those who can’t”. I get that. I am grateful every day that God gave me back the use of my legs. I don’t want to waste the opportunity. I’m doing it for God. I’m doing it for Sarah. She has always supported me when my life was not looking great, and I want to support her.
Favorite Running Route: I run on long deserted country roads. The ones I love the most are when I am running with someone else, because life’s challenges are so much easier to handle with someone else by your side…don’t you think?

Surprising myself...
"May last year's ceiling be this year's floor"
I'm pretty sure that is my moto for 2012 and I love it.
Goal setting is so important for so many reasons. For me this time my goals are huge, and meeting them. No, surpasing them is proving to be the best thing that has happened to me in a long time. I feel alive again. I feel like I really CAN do this!
Sometimes we just need to start over and that is o.k. I watch that video in my last post and I tear up for so many reasons. I have days when I fall and all I can do is lift my head and cry out for help.
Then I have days when I muster enough courage to get back up and fight.
Running for me is and has been a very practical way for me to pick myself back up again and show myself the race is not over. I have another chance to do something great with my life.
This Sunday I am about to run a 21km training run. I am about to surpass the longest distance I have ever ran and I feel so ready for it. This marathon training is surprising me. It is proving to me that I can do anything if I work hard and set my eyes on it. Don't get me wrong, I know the good Lord is right there with me holding off my injuries and carrying me sometimes.
I am so grateful for the journey I am on this year. Grateful that I have been able to pick myself back up and move forward one step at a time. I am grateful that I am restoring my relationship with God and feeling His presence more and more. Most of all I am glad that I got up and started over again.
One day I will win this race of life. I haven't given up and I'm certainly glad that God has not given up on me either.
Happy Running,
Alyson

I need your support
Please take a second to read this. At the end if you don’t care about supporting Mito Canada and my friend, then will you please support ME by helping me raise the money for Mito Canada? Every dollar will make a difference. Would you also forward this to someone else that may be willing to help me?
So here it is….
Running has helped me overcome obstacles in my life. In fact, I believe it is running that has helped me overcome my addictions. I run for stress relief. I run for the adrenalin. I run for the fitness. I run to prove to myself that I can do it. I run for me.
Training for my marathon is about MY goals. MY dreams, and well…me. But I don’t want life to be all about me me me. So how can I take a passion of mine and use it to help someone else? After all, I believe God calls us to use our talents and passions to help others. So I am trying to use my passion just that way.
I am running the Ottawa Marathon, May 2012. Training for a marathon is done one step at a time, one km at a time. In fact, marathon included, I will be running 1125kms to train for the event.
My goal is to raise one dollar for every km I run. The marathon is a journey, and I want every step of the way to be about something greater than myself.
I decided to raise money for Mito Canada for 2 reasons:
One, because my friend Sarah has a son with Mitochondrial disease. I can’t be there to help her with her daily struggles, and I can’t fix her son. So what can I do to show her that I care?? I can raise money that will go directly to her family and other families in Canada that struggle with the same thing. Since the money raised will not only go towards desperately needed research, but also help her directly, this is my way of telling her that I care.
The second reason is because of Mito's slogan "running for those that can't ". After becoming paralyzed from a tumor that was crushing my spinal cord, and doctors telling me that I may never walk again, I can't tell you how grateful I am every time I step out the door to run. God gave me back the use of my legs and using them to help others seems to be a good way to say thank you.
Running has always cured my ailments, and it is my prayer that my running can in turn cure someone else.
Thank you for taking the time to support not only me on my journey, but also Team Mito. Every little bit of support helps to make a difference in the lives of those affected by this terrible disease, and some of them are in your neighborhood.
Please…If you could support me on my journey I would really appreciate it. Donating is EASY. Just click on the link that I provided. Donating is done on line and is secure. You even get a tax receipt. If the link below does not work, simply go to Mitocanada.org, find the donations page and type in Alyson McNish to link up with my page.

I ran hills and my first 12km run last week and feel great. I am ready and pumped up to train for this marathon. Now all I need is your support. Will you help me help an amazing family? Will you show me your support and encouragement by supporting my cause? I REALLY want to raise 1$ for every km I run. I really want and NEED the motivation to keep training, and would love to know that my friends and family support me.

Week One Complete
I ran hills for the first time in YEARS yesterday. I was expecting not to be able to walk today but surprisingly feel great. That completes my first week of training for a FULL MARATHON. I only have 1100kms to go. Seems like a LOT of kms, but I'm no longer overwhelmed. One km at a time, one goal at a time, one week at a time and before I know it race day will be HERE!!
Tomorrow I run 12kms and I'm fine with that. I feel strong today. My experience with the half taught me that I will have good weeks and terrible weeks and that is O.K.
I'm looking forward to being able to start collecting money for TEAM MITO. My clothing order will arrive sometimes in February, and I just purchased a new pair of running shoes. The money I need to spend to train pales in comparison to the money my friend needs to spend to care for her son with Mitochondrial disease. This is my way of supporting her and helping her out so I'm o.k with stretching our budget for a great cause.
Mito Canada's goal is to raise awareness for this tragic disease, raise funds to support the family's dealing with it, and raise money for research to find a cure or medicines that help these kids. I love knowing that every km I run is for Nicholas and Sarah. It is not about me. It is about them and making a difference in their lives.
Will you consider helping me help them??
Alyson

I love knowing that every km I run is for Nicholas and Sarah. It is not about me. It is about them and making a difference in their lives.
Will you consider helping me help them??

I have to admit that I'm slightly overwhelmed at the number of kms I will need to run in the next 5 months to train for the Marathon. I calculated the official kms in my training program and they total 1125kms !!!!
I added them up because I will be trying to raise 1$ for every km I run. The money goes towards Mito Canada, a very worthy cause.
Wow, 1125 kms is a LOT. One step at a time right? One dollar at a time right? Perhaps when I order my Team Mito running gear I will feel more 'marathony'.
The key is for me not to look at the big numbers. The key is to accomplish one goal at a time. Running 4 days a week, then a 10k race, then a half, and to take everything one step at a time.
It helps knowing that I am running for team Mito Canada and my friend Sarah. It will also help knowing that my friends and family are supporting me every step of the way as you support Mito Canada. I can't do this by myself. Sarah needs your support and so do I. I'll let you know soon how you can help.
Meanwhile I'll strap on my shoes and get out that door. Oh, and order my Team Mito running gear. Maybe if I look the part it will help me to run faster.
Happy Running,
Alyson
