I posted a comment left yesterday. A natural running drink. Good idea. I'm sure I will try this. Thanks!!!
Hi Alyson, I am also training for the Ottawa Half. I didn't want to use Gatorade for so many reasons including some of the ones you suggested. I found some great recipes for easy home-made drinks. For the last few longer runs (between 13 and 17 k) I have been drinking a combination of:
2 tbsp lemon juice
2 c water
1 tbsp agave nectar
sea salt to taste
It's delicious, refreshing and I feel great. A running coach also suggested replacing the agave and lemon juice in the recipe with just a half a cup of fresh squeezed o.j.

Hi and thanks for reposting my comment! I'm still loving that drink. I'm considering making my own energy gel but the recipes look so, well, for want of a better word, gross.
Right now I'm sticking with my drink and my mini boxes of raisins.
Glad your long run went well.
Thank for you posting this recipe. I used this as my first attempt with a sport drink. I really enjoyed it and I found it quite easy on the stomach. I also like that I can play with different flavors depending on the agave nectar I have.
Yesterdays 13km run was vanilla :-)
Thanks again for a great tasting, cheap sports drink!
